Successful Completion of the Second GreEnergy Summer School at AMO GmbH, Aachen

The second edition of the GreEnergy Summer School took place on September 5-6, 2024, at AMO GmbH, Aachen, bringing together a diverse group of researchers and students from Germany, Finland, and Sweden. This unique doctoral school, part of the GreEnergy project, focussed on cutting-edge microfabrication techniques and their applications in 2D materials.

Participants explored a range of state-of-the-art microfabrication processes, including lithography, etching, atomic layer deposition, and so on, which play a crucial role in the development of next-generation energy harvesting devices based on graphene. A key feature of the programme was a hands-on experimental session on 2D materials, where attendees fabricated a graphene-based device. This process took students through the complete cycle - from graphene transfer, patterning, and electrical contact, to the final electrical characterization of the device. The hands-on training offered invaluable experience for young researchers to deepen their practical knowledge of advanced technologies, while gaining exposure to real-world applications in research.

With a total of nine participants, including bachelor’s, master’s, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers, the event attracted a broad audience from different academic levels. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees praised the well-organized presentations and comprehensive curriculum. Several participants expressed enthusiasm for longer experimental sessions, finding them the most stimulating part of the programme. All attendees reported gaining valuable knowledge and skills, confirming that the summer school met its goal of advancing education in energy-related microfabrication techniques.

Beyond the technical sessions, the event also included social activities, such as a city tour of historic Aachen and a networking dinner. These opportunities allowed participants to connect with one another and foster relationships with fellow students and future researchers in the field.

The GreEnergy Summer School, hosted by AMO GmbH, continues to deliver on its mission to provide young researchers with the tools and knowledge they need to advance in the field of sustainable energy technologies. The event is designed not only to educate but also to encourage collaboration, inspiring the next generation of researchers to contribute to the future of green energy.
